Match Report :
There is no doubt that this was a good win for Saints, in spite of one of their players being sent off and the fact that this Forest team is really not very good. Opposing managers due to play Forest will be rubbing their hands together. Unfortunately they include West Ham, playing them next Saturday.
Saints dominated from the off, deservedly leading through a Guly goal from a Connolly cross, but Lynch could have levelled for Forest before the break, only to head over when McGugan picked him out at the far post.
Referee Eddie Ilderton showed Forest's Luke Chambers a red card after he led with his arm in a 49th minute challenge on Connolly, who then doubled Saints lead just past the hour from Schneiderlin's pass.
Morgan Schneiderlin later scored a rare goal, finding the bottom corner with a cracking shot from long distance. This was then the invitation for Saints players to shoot on sight and the Forest goalkeeper made good saves from Holmes, Fox and Hammond in the closing stages.
Although this was Saints first away league win since Coventry on November 5th last year, it was also their second consecutive away win since Rickie Lambert started his three match ban for being sent off at Brighton.
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins:
"You have to earn the right to play football and we did that. We gave a very disciplined defensive performance that enabled us to go and control the game. Our principle is to pass the football and we did that very well.
"We have some exceptionally good footballers in this team and they demonstrated that. I know everyone will be talking about the sending-off but I thought we were in control of the game anyway so I don't think that would have affected the outcome.
"We scored three times and we could have had more and to win two successive away games without Rickie Lambert is very pleasing."
